Page 84: What am I looking forward to teaching this term
I hope everyone has had a great first week back to school/work.
Happy 2024!
Following on from last weeks reflection on my 2023 world of teaching, this week, to start this term, I am going to share three things that I am looking forward to teaching.
I work on a 'week ahead' cycle, planning for the next week in advance. This allows me to reflect on the learning that is taking place this week, make any adaptations, address any misconceptions and progressively ensure all learning opportunties have been well structures and curriculum objectives met across the half term. From 'mapping out' and thinking about our learning over the next few weeks, here are three things that I am excited to teach:
1. The introduction of grapheme - phoneme correspondence
In term 2, this is when we introduce what most people know as 'formal phonics' (the ability to see a letter and recognise by saying the correct sound). If you are up to date with my blogs, as previously mentioned, in term 1, our phonics sessions are dedicated to support children's listening and attention skills and building up there stamina to recognise and discriminate environmental sounds. Following on from an intensive activity based programme, they are ready to join the rest of the school in starting our phonics scheme (we use Read, Write, Inc). I look forward to hooking the children in beginning the introduction of set 1 sounds. I was so proud and pleased of my class last years phonics progress and journey, I look forward to that adventure starting again with this class!
2. Learning about changes of state
Throughout the year, we having a running theme of exploring the seasons. In the start of January, we learn all about winter, and compare this to our knowledge from learning about Autumn. Part of this includes talking about the temperature and weather changes. We had fantastic fun last year exploring and experimenting change of state with water. I 'accidentally' left a bowl of small world toys outside overnight and it ... froze. We explored the toys defrosting in the warmer weather and we had a go at freezing things such as water filled gloved. This 'winter' frozen hook lends itself to a plethora of language and vocabulary opportunties. I look forward to this this half term.
3. Our class assembly
Once a year, (sequenced throughout) each class puts on a learning showcase for their parents of what they have been getting up to and learning about in school so far. It is great for developing children's confidence in public speaking, revising and revisiting areas of learning throughout the year and a lovely way to engage parents and get them into school. Ours falls this term! I am currently in the process of writing our assembly performance. It is a lovely time to come together and celebrate with the children's families all the fantastic learning that has taken place so far this year.
This first week back complete, I am still feeling refreshed and reset from the Christmas break and have enjoyed the initial exploration into this terms topics and learning. I always note about the importance of reflection and that continual cycle, however, an additional key point to note that in your reflective cycle, forward thinking and preparation drives motivation. It is important to reach that good balence of both. Thank you for reading today's post and I will leave you with a 'reflective' question ...
Following on from an event/day/hour etc of last week, as a result, what is one thing you are looking forward to achieving this week?
- Miss Yeoman.
