Page 104: Top tips for professional development:
As I am coming towards the end of my NPQ I am continuing to reflect on some of my module learning as an aspiring leader. As part of my journey, throughout this year I have taken on the role, developing our teaching and learning policy. Following writing the policy, I delivered as series of inputs sharing with the staff our new policy and the underpinning pedagogy behind this. I used my own research tools as well as module content from my NPQ to inform the planning of my CPD inputs of how to utilise the most effective professional development.
Here are some of my thoughts surrounding professional development. Why is it important?
There are two main factors in why professional development is so important. Firstly pupil outcomes, and secondly teacher retention. Teaching quality is a crucial factor in raising pupil attainment and retaining staff. There are many features of effective professional development. I believe that when professional development has been based upon the best available evidence, produces lasting changes in understadning and is sustainable overtime by building on existing skills and knowledge are the key steps for success.
The EEF (2021) Outline 4 key mechanisms for effective professional development:
(a) build knowledge
(b) motivate teachers
(c) develop teaching techniques
(d) embed practices
In a supportive environment where trust and high standards are maintained as part of it, teachers are more likely to improve. It is echoed that professional development is more likely to succeed when there is support from leadership.
Reflecting upon this research, when delivering my series of inputs, I decided to incorporate a professional development booklet. Within my session slot, I allocated time for reflection against certain aspects. I ensured myself leading the input carried this critical reflection out at the same time as well as members of SLT. Leadership demonstrating their support was a great motivator for full staff participation.
As an aspiring leader, I look forward to referencing[ this page back myself when planning CPD and training that I deliver to staff. Thank you for reading.
