Page 108: The end of my ECT years and time in EYFS ... for now
I love my job. Being a teacher feels a privileged profession to be in. When I wake up on s school day, I feel lucky that I have the honour to see and teach my 30 wonderful humans and play that role in shaping their lives on their educational journey. Something that I do find it hard to believe is that I have now been teaching for two years! The past few years have flown by and I can not quite believe on Wednesday we brake up for the summer holidays and it will be my last day as an ECT.
For my ECT years I have taught in the EYFS. I have loved being a Nursery teacher. Some of my highlights include:
- You play a part in supporting the individual leaners to develop their personalities, learning to reason and be the catalyst to allow their fantastic imaginations to flourish is just wonderful.
- I just love continuous provision! Learning through play is essential in this stage of a child's development. I look forward to setting up an exciting provision where the children will have a plethora of learning opportunities daily.
- Nursery lays the foundation to ensure all children can read. Phonics is a huge factor in this and I throughly enjoy teaching our phonics sessions, however this is built upon a lot more. Exploring the effect of your voice and prosody as the teacher, singing nursery rhymes, reading stories and learning how to discriminate environmental sounds are only a few to mention.
Today I though it would be fitting to share 5 key reflections and top tips for ECTs.
1. Make the most of observations. Whilst you have this time, fully utilise your ECT time to learn from other colleagues and see the whole school picture. It really is valuable.
2. Make a schedule! I bet you have a daily schedule for what to teach your children but you need one too. Ensure you have a cut off point to go home, protecting and prioritising time for you.
3. After settling, think about starting an after school club with a different year group/phase. Running after school clubs with different children helped me feel really central, getting to know new pupils and the wider school.
4. Don't be afraid to say no. With ECT modules as well as getting to grips with the heavy workload at times of teaching, make sure your protect time for you.
5. Go to the staff room everyday at least for your first two weeks! Yes you might want to spend lunchtime marking or getting on top of that heavy workload, however, forming good relationships and getting to know your colleagues is essential, they are such an important support system.
Drawing to an end as a ECT also draws the end to my time in the EYFS. I am excited to announce that next year I will be teaching in Year 3 which I am incredibly excited to delve into this KS2 adventure! I have had the best time and really have throughly enjoyed teaching in the EYFS. As an aspiring leader I am reading for my next steps, delivering in a different key stage and different curriculum, building up my knowledge and understadning at whole school level. I look forward to the new pages in this new year group beginning.
Well done everyone for making it to the end of another school year. I hope you will join me for a well rested summer break and I look forward to getting back to school and sharing this new journey in September. See you then!
