Page 57: The transition part A - Settling in and Setting up your First Classroom.
In terms of the transition from signing your contract and starting, I was in the fortunate postion that I grateful for, that I had secured my role at one of my placement schools from my teacher training, I have even ended up having the classroom and year group which I trained in, however, it had been over a year so there was lots to catch up on!
After accepting my job, providing all my documentation and rather excitingly signing on the line what did I do?
I volunteered in EYFS 1 day a week to ease my transition, this allowed me to
Settle back into school routine.
Build relationships with all staff.
Learn how the printer and photocopier work and where all corridors lead to!
Prepare resources and displays such as tray and peg labels to be super organised ready to set up my classroom in due course.
Following on from using my volunteered time in Summer 2 to prepare a few things to make set up more smooth this is what I also learnt:
Yes I spent two weeks of my summer making my dream classroom that I am so proud of, but you can VERY easily spend your whole summer on this and I can almost guarantee from my experiences in EYFS
Lots of wear and tear and falling down displays
Changing topics so your classroom will transform drastically to align with your themes
So instead, spend this time setting up a perfect foundation for the additions throughout the year, make your classroom a positive, inspiring and encouraging classroom that fosters learning and in no way does it need to be perfect for September 1st. You and your children will learn together what works best in the environment which your individual children learn in, however much we feel we might need/pressure for a pinterest classroom! It is not about matching colours, it is about how the children learn in the environment that you create.
