Page 55: The relaunch of Miss Yeoman's Yearbook
Embarrassingly 10 months since my last post, I am now half way through my ECT year 1. I left you off following on from announcing that I had had secured my ECT postion. Let's have a quick delve into what has been taking place from then until now, leading into this relaunch of Miss Yeoman's Yearbook, now, as a qualified teacher.
April :
- Final post as a student teacher confirming securing my ECT position.
May:
- Submitted my dissertation 'What is/are the most effective method(s) used in teaching early speech/reading? Is one approach successful for all learners? A delve into early language acquisition from the EYFS into KS1.
June :
- Degree classified, receiving a first class honours in Primary Education with Qualified Teachers Status.
- Started my job early! Following on from volunteering in my school to settle back into the swing of it for 1-2 days a week, I was offered to cover a long term sickness in Year 4 for the end of Summer 2. It was fantastic to get this KS2 experience and start my teaching career. Over my short but special time with this class, we learnt a lot together and this really supported my transition into my ECT year. This opportunity also allowed me to get to know and develop strong working relationships with all staff across key stages as well as getting little bits and bobs ready for September. This was a fantastic experience that I recommend to anyone, jumping straight into teaching (getting paid as an unqualified teacher) in your school when university work has been completed.
July :
- Continued teaching year 4 to the end of the term.
- Graduation ceremony! This was an amazing day surrounded by all of the people that have been a part of this journey along the way, a truly special day to remember.
August :
- Much needed break after a busy few months completing my degree and working. I was fortunate to have gone away to Spain with friends and family for some needed sun and relaxation, ready for the year to come.
- Getting my classroom, preparing my displays, areas and everything needed for September. This was most definitely one of the more surreal moments.
September :
- ECT year started in Nursery (all will be delved into more throughly) including home visits, initial settling in part time hours and the full transition into primary education for our youngest learners.
October and November :
- The children had begun to really settle into school routine. We were able to deliver high quality teaching sessions of phonics (initial sound discrimination), mathematics, and communication and language alongside continuous provision daily.
December :
- Applied, secured and attended my first governors meeting. The opportunity came up to apply for the position of the new staff governor. I jumped at this opportunity and throughly are enjoying the work I am doing on the governing body so far and I am looking forward to exploring this path further.
January :
- Spring terms begins, full of lots of big and exciting changes!
1. The decision to join provision together so during continuous provision, both nursery classes are able to explore a larger with my in depth classroom areas.
2. Setting up and running a new programme of learning for pupils with SEND across out EYFS provision.
February :
- Being asked by my university to speak in a lecture about the transition from being a student teacher to an ECT.
This is a brief summery of where I am up to now. Over the last few months, I throughly enjoyed having the privilege to being the teacher of my 30 wonderful pupils. The progress they have made so far is fantastic and I am excited for the rest of the year to continue in the same way.
Over the next few weeks, I will delve into further what has been going on for far! Join me on Sunday for Page 56: Returning to university, where I will share the opportunity I have with my university where I did my teacher training, and my preparation into my lecture: the transition from being a student teacher to an ECT.
In true Miss Yeoman style, I will end today's page with an inspiring and uplifting quote that really resonates with myself as an EYFS teacher:
'Teacher's can change lives with the right mix of chalk and challenges" - Joyce Meyer
