Page 45: Back to Miss Yeoman Round Three ...

As I feel I have just got settled and back into the swing of university again, it is time to be back to Miss Yeoman with my KS1 placement in year 2 beginning tomorrow. I am ecstatic! I have missed being in the classroom and teaching so much so I am really excited to step back in and back to what I love most. Without a doubt, following on from a successful BA2 placement which I loved every moment of, I am initially slightly nervous for settling into  a new school again. These nervous feelings are completely normal and okay when starting something new, however, these feelings are overridden by my excitement to be teaching again, working and learning alongside fellow teachers and becoming part of my new schools community.

With lots to prepare and get sorted for tomorrow, I will keep today's page short and sweet sharing 5 quick tips when preparing for a teaching placement:

1. Research your school - Having a basic understanding of your school, its community, ethos and expectations is extremely beneficial on helping you settle in and become part of your schools team smoothly and confidently. Being already aware of key polices such as behaviour is vital in providing consistency for the pupils, as well as be thoroughly aware of important school safeguarding polices is essential.

2. Research your years curriculum  - With each placement being in a different year and the National Curriculum being such a broad and lengthy document, before you start your placement, have a through delve into the National Curriculum for your year group to establish a clear understadning of the statuary requirements you will be covering. If you are able  to access your schools medium term planning, it is great to make links and explore the topics that you will be teaching further to be knowledgeable and confident in the material which you will initially be covering.

3. Review previous placements lesson observations - To give yourself a confidence boost from where you left off, review your previous lesson observations, to remind you on your strengths as well as highlighting your development targets so they are on the front of your mind to address from the set off teaching again. This will help your professional development and progression in achieving your targets, and having this reflection before getting back in school is key to a successful placement. Redrawing on strengths and working on targets.

4. Organise key documents and stationary - There is nothing worse than feeling all over the place on placement; scrambling for an old pen and notebook the night before and falling into the depths of your cupboards and draws searching for that DBS check. Have your bag packed with firstly and most importantly your DBS check, following by key university documents that may be required and an all important notepad and pen. Two simple things can cause such loss without, having the ability to scribble down any quick notes, information, observations and feedback, having a specific placement notebook is vital.

5. Lunch and tea meal prep - Time is precious on placement and to say the day goes fast is an understatement! Having a meal plan prepared for the week, allows a stress free evening. Additionally,  prepping your lunch the night before allows a calm and organised in order to transfer into your classroom and day.

These are my 5 key tips that I have developed and learnt from previous placements that I have followed in preparation for tomorrow. I am really looking forward to sharing my experiences from school over the next few months on my final push and journey to become Miss Yeoman!
